Townsend Transportation Planning

Montachusett Joint Transportation Committee

The Montachusett Joint Transportation Committee (MJTC) is a planning advisory group, established under agreements among the Montachusett Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). The purpose of the MJTC is to provide the mechanism for an open and broadly participatory intermodal transportation planning process with maximum involvement on the part of local communities, officials and citizenry. The MJTC seeks to provide input into the development of the TIP, the UPWP, the RTP, the PPP and to act as a means to effective local public input throughout the process.

Townsend has two representatives appointed annually to the MJTC, one representative from the Board of Selectmen and another from the Planning Board.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) plays a pivotal role in transportation planning within the Commonwealth, including for local towns and municipalities. As a state-level agency, MassDOT is responsible for overseeing highways, public transit, aeronautics, and transportation licensing and registration. It works in collaboration with local governments to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive transportation plans. This involves conducting studies, allocating funds, and implementing projects aimed at enhancing safety, reducing congestion, and improving overall accessibility. In this way, MassDOT serves as an essential partner in achieving sustainable and efficient transportation systems at the local level.
